SELBYDISTRICT VISION

About Us

The people who benefit from our service are:

· Sight impaired people living in the Selby district area,

· Carers of service users who access the information and support  for their own needs,

· Local statutory bodies – our service is set up to complement the work of the local authority,

· Volunteers receive training and support to enhance their skills, increasing confidence and providing opportunities for mutual support and friendship,

· The wider public – we provide talks to raise awareness of sight loss issues,

· Other local organisations – we promote all local schemes that may benefit service users.

Our Aim

Selby District Vision is set up to promote the relief of blind and partially sighted people. We aim to improve the quality of life of this disadvantaged group by providing specialised services to meet their needs. Through the provision of information, advice, support, social activities and equipment, our goal is to:

· Enable our client group to continue to do every day tasks,

· Helps people remain independent and living in their own homes,

· Decrease the loneliness and isolation that can be experienced by people with a disability.

Selby District Vision is committed to helping those experiencing sight loss within Selby District, to support their needs by providing information and resources enabling them to maintain their independence.

The Selby District Vision area

Selby District Vision covers 280 square miles across the Selby district.  Within this area are the two towns of Selby and Tadcaster, plus the larger village of Sherburn in Elmet. The majority of the area is rural, with approximately 50 small to medium outlying villages.

THE STRUCTURE OF THE CHARITY

There is a management committee of 10 volunteer trustees and a paid part time Services Manager. Five committee members have experience of management and administration. Our Chair was area manager in the local social services working with people with visually impairment, our Secretary is a retired head teacher, our Treasurer is a local councillor, another member has experience of local government administration, and our Services Manager has been in post for 8 years and has been instrumental in developing the services alongside the trustees. Two trustees are registered blind or partially sighted and 2 are carers.

There are 5 part-time paid members of staff including the Services Manager, Finance / Administration Officer, Outreach / Resource Centre Co-ordinator, Volunteer / Events Co-ordinator and Administration Assistant. Selby District Vision trains and supports 50 plus volunteers, some of whom are also service users.

We depend on your help to fund the charity, please help us to continue our work
