Leaving a gift in your Will

No one likes to think about their own death however leaving a Will not only ensures your estate is divided according to your wishes, it also lifts the burden and worry from family members during a difficult and emotional period.

How to make a Will

Making a Will is simple, easy to arrange and needn’t be costly. Make an appointment with a solicitor to draw up a Will who can guide you through the process. Alternatively, many local banks are now able to provide this service.

If you already have a Will

A codicil is a supplement to your existing Will which allows new instructions to be included or old ones to be deleted and again can be arranged with your solicitor or bank.

Types of Gifts

· A fixed sum of money (don’t forget inflation can reduce the value of this-your solicitor or bank manager will explain ways round the problem).

· Leaving your residual estate, or part of it, to Selby District Vision. The residual estate is what is left over after your family and friends have been provided for.

· Stating that if people you name in your Will die before you, their share goes to Selby District Vision. If you outlive your family and anyone else named, and you do not make this provision, then your estate may be declared “intestate”, and all you leave will go to the treasury!

· Leaving the income from your estate to your nearest and dearest with the provision that, when they die, the whole part of the estate will go to Selby District Vision.

· Naming Selby District Vision as a beneficiary in a life insurance policy.

Are there any tax benefits to making a bequest to Selby District Vision?

The advantages of leaving a gift to Selby District Vision may bring the total value of your estate beneath the inheritance tax threshold and is also tax free.
